In Pitt's prototyping foundations class, I worked with a team of students to design and prototype a mechanized jacket that could inflate in the event of a fall. We wanted to prototype a discreet, comfortable wearable for the elderly and adults with special needs that accurately detects a fall case, inflates, and minimizes harm to the user. Fall case parameters were created by integrating an imu sensor and tilt sensor into the jacket. An alarm system, including an LED, a buzzer, and a Bluetooth connection to a mobile app, was also built into the jacket to notify caregivers for help, reducing the likelihood of further injury. This project aims to help users gain independence while providing caretakers with peace of mind. Click on the photos and videos to get more information!
